Savolax is a quarry track, and it drives like one: long routes cut through sand banks and slopes, three-quarters or more gravel, with only short tarmac links tying the loose sections together. It is the venue where loose-surface technique matters most — get it right and you gain time everywhere, get it wrong and you are ploughing through sand.
Driving the loose stuff
Gravel rewards patience and a car that rotates. You brake earlier than instinct says, get the turn done while the car is slowing, and feed the power back in progressively as the corner opens. Stabbing the throttle mid-corner just lights up the wheels and washes you wide into the sand banks that line most of the track. The banks are not just scenery — you can lean on them in places, but hit one square and it stops you dead.
Because the surface is deep and consistent, this is where a gravel-biased setup pays off: softer, more compliant suspension to keep the tyres in the dirt over the ruts, and a differential set up for traction out of the slow stuff. Main versus Short, and reverse
The venue ships four ways to run it: the long Main Route and a tighter Short Route, each with a reverse. The Short Route is even more gravel-dominant (82%) and strings the slow corners closer together, so it punishes a setup that only works when the car is settled. The reverses change which banks you are braking toward — worth a few laps each to relearn, since a corner you attacked downhill one way you now climb into.
