Why these numbers

The Crusader is the textbook front-driver: nose-heavy, modest torque, and prone to understeer the moment you ask the front to steer and drive at once. The whole setup is about taking work off the front axle. Soft front, stiff rear — a firm rear bar and springs loosen the tail so the nose rotates on entry, then you protect the loaded front on the way out.

The differential governs the driven front wheels here. It locks up on loose surfaces to put the modest torque down, and opens on grip so it stops fighting your steering — a tight driven diff on tarmac just piles on understeer. Keep the coast side low so the driven axle does not push on entry, and bias the brakes forward while leaving a slice at the rear to help the light tail come round.

Why these changes

Asphalt exposes the exit understeer most clearly — the loaded front runs out of grip trying to do two jobs. Stiffen the rear further, drop the car, firm the front to use the grip, and open the diff so it stops fighting your steering out of the corner.

Add more front negative camber to keep the outside edge planted, and hold onto that slice of rear brake so you do not lose the entry rotation the car leans on.

Why these changes

Gravel is the Crusader at its best and sits close to the hybrid setup. Lift-off rotation is your friend here — ease off to bring the nose round, then feed the power back in and drive out straight.

Keep the rear bar firm so the tail stays willing to rotate, and keep corrections small; the modest torque means momentum is everything on a loose surface.

Why these changes

Mud is where front-drive understeer bites hardest — the driven wheels dig and the nose washes wide. Soften the front, raise the ride height to clear the ruts, and lock the diff up so both front wheels pull the car out instead of spinning the inside one away.

Get all your rotation done on the entry lift and roll onto the power smoothly; stabbing the throttle just loads the front and pushes you straight on.

Overview

The Crusader is a front-wheel-drive economy coupe in the mould of an early-2000s Chevrolet Cavalier. Most of its weight sits over the nose (roughly 62/38), and the front tyres do all three jobs at once — steering, braking and driving. That makes it the textbook FWD car: it wants to push wide, and the way you beat that is to get it turned before you ask the front for drive.

How it drives

On tarmac the limiting factor is power-on understeer. Carry too much speed into a corner, or get on the throttle before the wheel is straight, and the loaded nose washes wide. The Crusader is fast when you slow it, point it, and only then unwind and drive out — patience on entry buys you a straighter, faster exit.

The trick is to make the light rear work for you. Lift off or trail a little brake into the corner and the tail will rotate, swinging the nose toward the apex so you can get on power earlier and straighter. Entry is where you make time; exit is where you protect the front’s grip rather than squander it in wheelspin. On loose surfaces that rotation comes more easily, so it becomes a genuine tool rather than something to fear.

In a pack the Crusader is a modest, mid-weight car — it neither shrugs off big hits like a muscle car nor darts clear like the lightest hatches. Its defence is a clean line and using that entry rotation to stay off the racing line when contact is coming.
