Mixed tracks hand you two different cars in one lap. Tarmac gives high, predictable grip where the car stays planted and stops short. The moment you cross onto gravel or dirt the grip drops, the car starts moving around under you, and braking distances stretch. The mistake is driving the whole corner as if the grip never changed — the fast approach is to know exactly where the surface flips and set the car up for the side you are landing on.
Brake on the grip, coast onto the loose
Do your hard braking while you are still on the grippy side, where the tyres can actually take it. Get the speed off early, then carry a lower, more patient entry speed onto the loose side and let the car settle. Braking late so that you are still hauling the car down as you cross onto gravel just locks the wheels and slides you past the apex. Shed the speed where the grip is, not where it has already gone.
Treat the join like a braking marker
The edge of the tarmac is a marker as real as any board or cone. Anticipate it, expect the car to move as the grip falls away, and lift a fraction earlier than feels necessary. If you wait to react until you feel the back end go light, you are already late — the correction comes before the join, not after it.
Getting back on the power
Coming the other way — feeding throttle on the loose just before it turns to tarmac — asks for the same patience. Wait for the grip before you commit. Squeeze in gently while you are still on gravel and let the front hook up as the surface firms, rather than burying the throttle on the loose and spinning the rears right as the tarmac arrives.
Set up for both, not one
Because you spend real time on both grip levels every lap, a setup tuned hard for a single surface fights you on the other. A neutral, hybrid-leaning balance carries better across the whole track — the hybrid tab of the generic RWD guide is a sensible starting point.
On a gamepad
The surface change is exactly where a coarse input bites hardest — the car is at its most unsettled right as your stick or trigger is least precise. Keep corrections small and early, roll into the join instead of jerking at it, and lean on the site’s Steering Ratio note (one notch slower than shown) to take the edge off.
